Deer Creek Middle School Grading Practices

Students have two categories of grades in each core subject:

Academic Grades (Full Credit of the Content)
Process Skills (Executive Function Skills)

Academic Grades (Full Credit of the Content)

Academic Grading Categories:

60% Summative Data: Gradebook entries are representative of what the student knows at the end of a section or unit of study. (Tests, quizzes, projects, essays, etc.)
40% Formative Data: Gradebook entries are representative of what knowledge the student is developing during the unit of study (Quizzes, in-class work, homework, group activities, etc.) *Retakes are allowed for summative assessments for full credit, but student must conference with the teacher and complete qualifiers at the teacher’s discretion.

Process Skills (Executive Function Skills)

Gradebook entries are representative of what the student is able to do throughout the learning process. Teachers will review the rubric and teach these skills to students.

Weekly Process Skill scores are final on Fridays.
Each week is a new week!
Teachers will engage students in ongoing reflection on their process skills, and we hope this will lead to meaningful discussions at home, too!
These are not “behavior” grades. We have consequences in place for misbehavior (warnings, parent contact, marks, suspension, etc.). Misbehavior is kept separate from student grades.
The Process Skill grades are competencies that we want all students to achieve that make them better learners.

Eligibility

Students must have a 60 or higher in all subject areas in both academics and process skills to be eligible to participate in any extracurricular activity.

Students with a grade of 59 or less will be put on probation for one week.
Students with a grade of 59 or less the second week will become ineligible.
Once all grades are a 60 or higher, students become eligible again for the following week.
Eligibility is run on Thursdays and takes effect the following Monday. Ineligible students are restricted from participation Monday - Sunday.

Antler Up Time

Antler Up provides students with time to practice reading fluency, get extra help, work on missing assignments, make-up or retake tests, as well as participate in fun activities. Antler Up is held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:55 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
